A 2016 Audi A3 with the CJSA engine recently arrived at Autosavvy Mechanical in Noosaville for investigation of a suspected turbocharger problem.
Our inspection confirmed that the turbocharger had failed, with excessive play in the impeller. Further checks revealed metal debris in the intercooler pipes, both before and after the intercooler.
Why is this important?
When a turbocharger fails internally, metal fragments can travel through the intake system and potentially cause further engine damage if they are not removed. Simply replacing the turbo without thoroughly checking and cleaning the associated components could leave behind debris that compromises the replacement unit or the engine itself.
We have ordered a replacement turbocharger and will thoroughly inspect and clean the intake pipework, intercooler and associated components to ensure metal fragments are removed. We will also change the engine oil and filter to help remove any contamination that may have entered the lubrication system.
During our full vehicle inspection, we also identified an oil leak from the sump. As the oil will already be drained during the repair, we have recommended replacing the sump gasket at the same time.
The Autosavvy approach
Turbocharger failure requires careful diagnosis and attention to the surrounding systems, not just replacement of the failed component. Our aim is to carry out the necessary checks and cleaning to help protect the engine, restore reliable operation and reduce the risk of repeat failure.
At Autosavvy Mechanical, Noosaville, we believe thorough inspections and preventative attention are essential to quality automotive repairs.
