While checking the cooling system, we found the radiator was very old and becoming brittle, with visible deterioration around the radiator outlet. It was a genuine concern that it could fail under the heat and workload of a long outback trip — potentially leaving the vehicle stranded a long way from help.

Rather than risk it, we replaced the radiator and coolant before the trip.
