This 2015 four cylinder turbo diesel has travelled an impressive 355,000 km, but we’ve found a good reminder of why diesel engines need maintenance beyond just oil and filter changes.
We’re currently dismantling the exhaust/intake and EGR system, and there’s a substantial amount of soot and carbon build-up throughout the EGR components.
Over time, soot from the exhaust mixes with oily vapours from the engine breather system and can create a sticky carbon deposit. As it builds up, it can restrict airflow, affect the EGR system and contribute to poor performance, increased fuel consumption and drivability problems.
The good news? We’re pulling the affected components apart, giving everything a thorough clean.
It’s also a good reminder that preventative maintenance isn’t just about changing the oil. Keeping the intake and EGR system clean can help a high-kilometre diesel continue doing what it does best — racking up the kilometres.
